Microsoft’s market cap has recently surpassed Apple. It is now the biggest company in the world worth around 3 trillion dollars. Without any doubt, this is due to its bet on OpenAI. In Davos World Economic Forum, Economist has interviewed Sam Altman the CEO of OpenAI and Satya Nadella the CEO of Microsoft. Microsoft owns 49 percent of OpenAI. OpenAI exclusively licenses its products to Microsoft. The relationship between these two firms is under scrutiny. Just recently, two government antitrust regulators in Britain and the European Union investigated if they are violating antitrust laws.
Mr. Altman refuses the monopoly chargers: “You can look at vertically integrated options and you can look at our partnership, and you can decide which one is more pro competition.” Though, it is clear that no businessman openly admits its firm monopoly power and no businessman likes competition very much as it shrinks down the margins.
As it relates to Jobs, both Mr. Satella and Mr. Altman believes that AI will produce more jobs than it terminates. Mr. Nadella thinks AI will make the job market more dynamic. It causes some wages to go up and others eventually to be “commoditized.” (means to be declined)
Mr. Altman describes the progress to a more sophisticated AI as a continuous procedure. He actually drew the example of Iphone evolution. No single model had a big leap over the previous version but the difference between first versions and latest versions are extraordinary. Mr. Satella said the models will get better at every task from generating essays to churning out computer codes. Both of them believe that technological progress in the AI front is the most important ingredient toward a better future.
