A survey conducted with Labour voters revealed that many found the government’s six priorities—such as raising living standards, building homes, ending health backlogs, and increasing police numbers—vague and difficult to recall.
The Economist, in collaboration with More In Common, explored alternative targets that might resonate better with voters. The survey results indicated that policies like lowering energy bills had a stronger potential to sway voters, compared to goals like achieving 95% clean power by 2030.
The government’s performance is underwhelming, with some positive developments like rising wages and falling energy bills, but other areas, such as emergency wait times, housebuilding, and small boat crossings, show little improvement or worsening trends. On an overall score of 0 to 100, the government’s progress is rated at 30, just above its lowest point in September 2023, but significantly lower than its peak in 2021 during the pandemic.
